Position Title:
Battery Test Engineer
Position Summary:
BrightVolt is seeking a highly motivated, detail oriented, and hands-on Battery Test Engineer based at our R&D center in Newberry, IN. This position will be directly responsible for the planning, execution and reporting of battery and related component-level evaluation, characterization and performance testing activities. These activities will be typically associated with various lithium ion battery designs, and the materials used in their development. S/he will design, develop and implement test setups comprising of electronic loads, power supplies and data acquisition systems, as needed, and will also be experienced in carrying out calibration and basic troubleshooting of testing instrumentation and automated equipment such as battery cyclers and environmental chambers. The candidate will also be expected to spend some hands-on time in the lab developing and building prototype cells and test samples. The tasks of this position will be conducted both independently and in collaboration with other scientists and engineers. The successful candidate will be a dedicated team player who is tolerant of risk and uncertainty, thrives in a highly-technical and collaborative startup environment, and has significant experience working within multidisciplinary teams.
Qualifications Required:
· BS degree in Electrical, Chemical or Mechanical engineering. Ideally, some industry experience preferred but not necessary
· Direct experience with testing of batteries against various industry standards for Automotive and/or Consumer Electronics’ applications such as UL2580, IEC62133, etc. a plus
· Basic understanding and knowledge of lithium-ion battery cell components, and design and development experience in building test cells is required
· Must possess good working knowledge of Microsoft Office suite (Excel, Access, SQL, PowerPoint, etc.)
Essential Functions and Requirements:
· Ability to create scripts and execute test profiles on various battery cyclers such as Arbin, Bitrode, Maccor, Digatron, Bio-Logic, Chroma, PARSAT, etc.
· Process data, create charts and report findings using Microsoft Excel
· Experience with Voltaiq automated test data reporting system a plus
· Formulate design of experiments (DOEs) to maximize utilization of available test resources that can deliver a high throughput of data collection and learning for ongoing R&D activities
· Develop custom procedures, fixtures, jigs, etc. as needed to carry out required test activities
· Drive continuous improvement and error-free automation in standardizing test protocols, data acquisition techniques, data analysis, and data mining and archiving systems
· Define, select, source, commission, validate and calibrate new instrumentation and test equipment, as may be required
· Review and maintain calibration records of all lab test equipment, as needed, from time to time
· Coordinate test project activities at any 3rd party test facilities from initial RFQ through the final reporting stages
Job Competencies (Knowledge, skills and abilities):
- Solid understanding of how a lithium-ion battery works
- Familiarity in handling lithium-ion batteries and their associated safety standards and best practices
- Familiarity with governing regulatory and industry test standards such as UN38.3, UL2054, UL1642, UL62133, SAEJ2464, etc. is preferred
- Basic experience in performing battery failure and root cause analysis investigation a plus
- High attention to detail, accuracy and precision, especially as it applies to “error-free” test data reporting
- Strong team player with good interpersonal skills
- Excellent communication skills in effectively sharing data results and findings across all organizational levels, including with the executive leadership team
- Maintain a clean workspace and follow all safety protocols
- High energy self-starter and multi-tasker who thrives in a fast-paced startup environment

Pay: $104,000.00 - $119,000.00 per year
