Let's be honest, everyone has the same vet ad these days. So what makes this different?
First the facts. Erickson Vet has been an institution in Chico for over 70 years. Our clients are special. You hear that a lot, but in this case it's true. The founder of the practice cultivated a practice that focused on quality medicine instead of quantity. Today, the are 4, even 5th generation clients coming to the practice. We currently have 4 vets and 3 RVTs on staff, with a support staff of 15. That probably makes us a de facto 2.2 FTE practice on average, open Mon to Saturday 8 to 6, with no Sundays or nights. Yup! You actually are expected to refer those emergencies that come in half an hour before closing! And you will never have to work Sundays! (Unless it's your own pet on a Sunday of course)
We have computers in each room!
We have tablets!
We use Idexx Cornerstone!
Labs? We have Idexx digital xray. We have the full in house Idexx lab suite. We run a ton of labs.
Dentals? We do about 12COHATs a week, with digital dental rads mandatory. Our techs have learned from advanced dental training from a southern california dental specialist!
Surgeries? Most soft tissue stuff is done 3 days a week. We have a board certified ortho specialist who comes in and does TPLOs/other by appointment only.
Ultrasound. We can do ECHOs with a specialist remoting in through our equipment.
We're looking ideally to add a new full time vet to our practice, part timers would have to at least work 2 days a week on average for this to work. Without that, there's no way to build up the rapport with the clientele. Our staff have deep roots in the community and so do our clients. The sheriff is a client!
Mentorship? 2 of our associate vets used to own their own practices and have decades of experience that they are willing to impart. Our other 2 associates are younger but are still amazing. We have monthly doctor-only meetings where we discuss cases and new methodologies. We try to encourage conference/CE attendance.
Workflow. 10 minute appointments? Nope. 15? Nope. 20? Nope!. Instead appointments are booked in at least 30 minute slots. We don't double or triple book appointments, and we generally try to book wellness exams towards the end of the day.
And you get an assistant! (If you want), either an experienced veterinary assistant or RVT depending on the case in rooms with you. They're generally working up the treatment plan for you as you go over the details with the client.
Doctors' notes are typed into cornerstone so transfer of cases is a cinch! Just read the medical note from the previous day.
COVID? We've had ZERO staff test positive for COVID since the pandemic started. We utilize rigorous disinfection protocols, electrostatic mister, and an ultraviolet light disinfection robot. Staff check their temperatures when clocking into work.
Lunch? You generally get an hour for lunch. But you're saying, everybody says that. Nope, it usually works.
Compensation? We probably pay our doctors the highest in the area. Each compensation plan is tailored to the needs of the individual associate. 100% production, prosal, pure salary, benefits, everything is customizable based on the associate. Signing/moving bonuses are negotiable.
Work Culture. The clients are special. Can't say that enough, they are very nice. Of course every practice has their "Karens," but we fire those clients. What? You're not forced to deal with abusive clients? Nope! Tell the hospital director and that client is gone! Chico is in some ways still a small town, even though there's about 100,000 people in the area, the small town vibe is still omnipresent.
Records. We're on the path towards paperless. Every medical record is into Cornerstone. SOAPs are typed directly into Cornerstone. We have 2-way-texting integrated with cornerstone so you can text clients directly if it doesn't require a phone call. Besides the texting, most of our clients have been trained to use emails for other types of communication. We do not write paper prescriptions, instead typing them up and emailing them in (except for scheduled drugs because DEA says nope). We have an online pharmacy and relationships with several compounding pharmacies. Our blood, rads, and dental rads are completely integrated with cornerstone. We send most radiographs off to telemedicine for boarded specialist review. Check-in sheets get shredded after all the information gets typed into cornerstone. We eliminated our fax machine over a month ago! Painful, but sometimes you have to rip off the bandaid!
Surrounding environment: Are you a foodie? There's tons of great food options around. Chico is a foodie town, embracing the farm-to-table approach. Hiking? Boating? Fishing? Tons of those within a short drive. Great schools for the kiddos and of course the famous Chico State! Safety? CPD and Butte Sheriff are top notch. Also a lot of our staff are health-conscious, having a regular hiking club going. Before the pandemic, we actually did a tough mudder together!
