Essential Responsibilities:
- Supports the services and values of the Hospital:
- Make assessment of patient needs from the preceding shift.
- Assure completion of narcotic/controlled substance counts.
- Assign patient responsibilities to the appropriate staff.
- Assure assignment of meals and rest period for all personnel.
- Pay close attention to the needs of agency and float personnel.
- Assume primary responsibility for communication of any significant event or situation to the appropriate person.
- Follow unit orientation guidelines when assisting with the orientation of new employees, In-House Registry nurses, nurses reassigned from other units, or agency nurses.
- Make sure emergency equipment is ready for use and if used during the shift, is responsible to see that it is replaced. Check to assure emergency equipment is in working order.
- In the event of a disaster, fire or other emergencies (Code Blue), direct activities of patients and staff.
- Act as a resource person.
- Coordinate all unit activities, i.e., staff activities, admissions, transfers, discharges, emergency situations, activities involving other shifts; coordinate with Bed Control the appropriate bed assignment of patients.
- Communicate needs of patients and unit to oncoming Charge nurse.
- Assure that the refrigerator thermometers for the medication and food refrigerators are functioning properly. If not, report all malfunctions to the Maintenance Department.
